UK court upholds controversial online copyright infringement act

On April 20, 2011, the UK High Court upheld the nation's Digital Economy Act (DEA), aimed at the prevention of online copyright infringement. In November 2010 the court granted a claim filed by UK internet service providers (ISPs) BT Group, PLC and TalkTalk Telecom Group, PLC to review the law. Justice Kenneth Parker dismissed four of the five challenges, including claims that the bill was not adequately scrutinized before passage. Despite the increased political scrutiny, the ruling allowed the DEA to proceed toward implementation.
