On January 1, 2011, the Yemeni Parliament gave preliminary approval to adopt a constitutional amendment that would have abolished presidential term limits in the country. The Yemeni constitution [PDF] originally permitted the president to sit for a maximum of two consecutive seven-year terms, but the draft amendment would have shortened the term length to five years and eliminated the two-term cap. The legislation was granted preliminary approval by the a legislature dominated by the ruling General People's Congress (GPC) of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and was decried as an attempt to make Saleh president for life.
